Ontario Engineering Competition 2006
After writing a quiz on Friday and not knowing if my answer actually answered the question, I was off to Sheraton for OEC2006. Got there mid-afternoon before much happened on the registration front. Guests were impressed with the accomodations they were getting. It's a very nice hotel. Registration was fairly smooth and dinner was a hit. Senior design and consulting engineering competitions began that night. We got to bed by 3:30 and slept till 6:00 when the big day would start.
Breakfast was tame but the jitters of transportation never materialized as the buses did their job. Competitions went on in BA and GB and all were on schedule except senior design testing. A few worries about lunch running low, but it was enough in the end. As we neared 7 for the dinner and reception at Chestnut, we realized no one was showing up. Turns out that the buses did not know they had to switch their route to take guests from Sheraton to Chestnut. Fortunately, senior was delayed and the buses did not switch, otherwise competitors would have been stranded at BA. We radioed the drivers and coordinated a solution. Dinner was good and light, with a band crashing and a cannon firing. UofT did well, winning Debate and Entrepreneurial Design. The night ended with social activities planned at Tonic and Fez Batik. We got back to the hotel at 1 or later and drank some of our free wine. Got to bed to wake up at 9 for the advisory board meeting.
It was a tiring experience but fun. It was often stressful, leaving no time for school. It's certainly a lot harder than being a competitor. I could have taken the easy route and won some money along the way, but this was a great experience, managing a $115,000 budget. Congratulations guys! We pulled it off.
